Tamsulosin hydrochloride is medically categorized as an alpha blocker. The drug is also known by its brand name Flomax. Combination products include Jalyn, which contain Dutasteride together with Tamsulosin.
What is tamsulosin hydrochloride used for?
It is primarily used by men suffering from prostate issues and facing difficulties while urinating. These include the inability to properly urinate, frequent urination, and pain experienced while urinating. Tamsulosin provides relief from such problems by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and prostate so as to allow for easy urination.
Tamsulosin hydrochloride is usually taken through the mouth and is available in 0.4mg tablet form. The drug is typically taken once a day, 30 minutes after the same meal. It must be swallowed whole. The drug should not be chewed, crushed, or opened up before consumption.
Doctors generally advise people to take the drug in lower doses initially. And depending on the condition of the patient, the dosage will be increased over a period of two to four weeks.
In case you miss out on a dose, take it immediately as soon as you remember it. However, if it is too close to the schedule of the next drug intake, it is better to stay away from taking the missed dose. Just skip it and continue with the regular dose.
One should take Tamsulosin exactly as directed by their doctor or pharmacist. If you take too many or too less, you might experience serious side effects. And continue taking the medication for as long as possible. Only stop when the doctor advises doing so.
Remember that Tamsulosin will only help in controlling the effects of the enlarged prostate. It won’t cure the condition. It usually takes about 4 weeks for the medication to start showing benefits. The recommended dossage of the Tamsulosin is Tamsulosin Hydrochloride tablets 0.4 mg taken once a day. The drug should be taken 30 minutes after the same meal until the prescribed dose is completed. The reason why the drug is taken only once a day is because Tamsulosin hydrochloride sustained release capsules are released to the bloodstream slowly, a little at a time. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water without reaking it open.
The dosage may be increased to Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.8 mg if the symptoms do not improve with two or more weeks of use. Missed doses should be taken as soon as possible unless the time for the next dose is near, a case in which the missed dose should be skipped and the next one taken as normal.
