Clobetasol Propionate

Clobetasol Propionate is applied topically on the skin as a cream to manage various skin diseases. These diseases include allergies, psoriasis, and eczema among many other skin conditions. The most common allergy treated by this Clobetasol Propionate cream is the Poison Ivy allergy. This drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1985 as a prescription drug.

Other names

The drug is also known generically as clobetasol propionate cream and ointment while its brand name is 'Temovate'. Other brand names include Clobex, Cormax, Olux, and Embeline.

Mode of Action

Its main mode of action works to prevent the release of inflammatory mediators. These inflammatory mediators include PAF, prostaglandins, Leukotrienes, cytokines, histamine, and Bradykinin

Pharmacokinetics

This drug is absorbed through the skin percutaneously and metabolized in the hepatic system. It is then excreted in urine and faces.

How To Use And Dosage

The drug exists as a topical cream where it comes as 0.05% (Temovate) and 0.025% (Impoyz). It also comes as a topical foam with the brand name Olux 0.05% and it also comes as a topical gel at 0.05%.

If the patient comes with Corticosteroid responsive dermatosis you do the following:

Using the Clobetasol Propionate cream, apply a thin film of the layer on the affected area twice a day and rub gently. You should not exceed 50g in seven days.

The same goes for the Clobetasol Propionate Lotion. Apply it on the affected areas of the skin twice a day and rub gently. It should not exceed 50g a week.

Clobetasol Propionate Cream 0.025% should not be used for more than two consecutive weeks or the final dosage shouldn't exceed 50 gram in seven days. This is because it could suppress the pituitary-hypothalamic adrenal axis and impair the organ functions.

Clobetasol Propionate (Clobex) Lotion, 0.05% should not be used when a client has occlusive dressings. Again, do not apply this lotion on the face, groin, vagina and also if there is skin death at the application site.

First of all, you need to read the leaflet that comes with this drug. Read and understand what the manufacturer says about the drug. Also, note the doctor's prescription and what he/she advised you to do.

Clobetasol Propionate cream is often applied in small preparations on the affected areas of the skin. After you have applied, massage the area with your fingers applying pressure gently.

Generally, Corticosteroids such as Clobetasol Propionate are not supposed to be used for a longer duration of time. This is due to the side effects involved which will be discussed in the subtopics below.

This specific drug should not be applied in a broken skin or infected areas of the skin unless it is given with an antibiotic.

Side Effects

Just as any other pharmaceutical drug in the market, Clobetasol Propionate has its own side effects that might be experienced when taking the drug. Some of them appear just for short time and are dose dependant but end after the drug has been eliminated. It is, however, important to let your doctor know when you start having the following symptoms:

Blurry Vision, anxiety or depression, general body malaise, Polyuria and Polydipsia, Fainting or drowsiness, Fast heartbeat or palpitations, and irritability.

If you also experience sudden muscle weakness, lack of appetite, Increase blood pressure and weight gain you need to consult your doctor about these symptoms.

Children are not supposed to take steroids such as Clobetasol Propionate for a longer time since they affect growth in most children including teenagers.

Before having surgical procedures performed on you such as a dental procedure, let your dentist know that you are using Clobetasol Propionate.

Precaution /Contraindications

Before taking the drug Clobetasol Propionate, it is wise to inform your doctor or pharmacists if you have had any of the following ailments. These diseases include: Type two diabetes, Any skin infection such as Rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis or things like thining of the skin, Cushing syndrome, disorders of the immune system, tuberculosis, a recent vaccination against any disease, vascular disorders, increased intracranial pressure (ICP), Eye problems such as Cataract, Medicine allergies among other conditions.

Do not use apply this drug topically continuously for more than a fortnight consecutively.

If your symptoms do not improve or rather the condition worsens, let your doctor know about it.

For those with diabetes, this drug raises your blood sugar levels. The mechanism happens when it is used over large areas of the body. The relationship is directly proportional. If you increase the dosage of Clobetasol Propionate, the higher the risk of hyperglycemia. With such a combination of drugs, it is advised to continuously monitor your blood glucose levels.

The use of steroids/ corticosteroids increases your risk of developing problems with your adrenal glands. This, however, happens after prolonged use of these corticosteroids such as Clobetasol Propionate.

Pregnancy and Clobetasol

It is not well understood whether Clobetasol Propionate can harm the unborn baby during pregnancy. Thus it is wise to consult your doctor when you get yourself in such a situation. However, Clobetasol Propionate has been taken by a very limited number of pregnant women and no malformations have been reported about this drug. It is also not known whether the drug Clobetasol Propionate crosses the breastmilk.

This medication is only used for the skin only. Do not apply it to other parts of your body such as the face or vagina or under your arms. Before touching the drug, wash your hands thoroughly. In addition, clean and dry the affected area of the skin before applying this cream/ lotion. Do not over the area with a dressing. Just leave the drug to take its course. Afterward, wash your hands to avoid transporting the drug to areas like your eyes. In case you do so, rinse the areas with a lot of water then seek medical review.
