Brimonidine Tartrate Ophthalmic Solution

What is brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution used for?

Brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution is used to treat open-angle glaucoma, a condition characterized by high fluid pressure in the eye. It is important to decrease high fluid pressure in the eye in order to prevent nerve damage, vision loss or blindness. Brimonidine tartrate works by allowing proper drainage of fluid within the eye and by lowering the amount of fluid retained in the eye. Brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic eye drops are commonly known as an alpha agonist. Children less than two years of age should not use this drug because of its known side effects such as slowed breathing. You should consult a doctor or pharmacist in the proper usage of this ophthalmic solution.

How to use brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic

Before using brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution it is important that you wash your hands first in order to avoid contamination. Do not touch the tip of the dropper or let it touch any other surface or even your eye. If you wear contact lenses, always remember to remove them before using brimonidine tartrate and then wait 15 minutes after using it before you put your lenses back on.

When you are ready to apply the ophthalmic solution you should tilt your head back, roll your eye upward and then pull down your lower eyelid in order to make a small pouch. Place the dropper directly above your eye and then squeeze it to allow a drop of the ophthalmic solution to fall in your eye. After applying the solution, look downward and then close your eyes for a minute or two. Apply gentle pressure in the corner of your eye - near your nose - by placing a finger on this spot. However, it is important that you don’t rub your eye in order to prevent ophthalmic solution from draining out. You should also try to avoid blinking. If needed, repeat these steps on your other eye.

You should not rinse the dropper after using brimonidine tartrate. Simply replace the dropper cap after each use. If you need to put another kind of medication in your eye, you need to wait at least 5 minutes before applying it. As a general rule, eye drops should be used before eye ointments because drops need time to fully enter the eye.

Brimonidine tartrate should be used three times daily or as directed by a doctor. Regular use of the solution is recommended in order to get its full benefits. It is also recommended that you use the solution at the same times everyday. Experts recommend continuous usage of the solution even if symptoms have stopped. You should consult your doctor before you stop using this medication. You should also tell your doctor immediately if your symptoms worsen after using this ophthalmic solution.
